About Boston Catlines
Boston Catlines was founded in 1985.  Our goal is to find the best strings possible for as many stringed instruments (plucked and bowed) as possible.  In so many cases, there is no standard size for early instruments, and it's important to consider each individual instrument's dimensions and characteristics when designing a set of strings for it. We try to figure out what's best for you and your instrument, taking into consideration the pitch level (a'=440, a'=415, a'=392, or something else) as well as the tuning of the instrument. When a set of strings is out of balance with itself (some strings may be too heavy, others too light), it's hard to get an optimum sound. We'll do our best to even out the sound of your instrument, if that's what you're looking for, or to improve the sound of the trebles or basses or midrange.
Olav Chris Henriksen
Olav Chris Henriksen has over 30 years' experience in designing string sets for lutes, viols, guitars, harps, and other instruments. The fifth generation in his family to play guitar, he began as a folk and jazz/rock guitarist, later studying lutes and early guitars at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland.  Since 1984 he has been performing and teaching in the Boston area, as well as concertizing around the U.S. and abroad, recording with groups including the Boston Camerata, and organizing concert series in Cambridge and Somerville, MA.  He is a consultant to the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, where he frequently lectures and demonstrates the guitars and other plucked instruments in the Museum's collection.  His solo CD "La Guitarre Royalle" was recorded on the original guitar made by N.A. Voboam (Paris 1680) owned by the MFA Boston.
The Instruments
Are you having trouble finding a top e" string that will work on your violin?  Does the midrange on your viola da gamba tend to sound weak?  We can advise on strings for lutes of all sizes, early guitars, theorbos, archlutes, early banjos, violas da gamba, violins, violas, cellos, some double basses, harps, hurdy-gurdies, and many others. We've even supplied strings for trombamarinas!  We carry many types of strings (but not all), and we can often special-order what we don't have in stock, so that we can string up your cittern or bandora or other specialized instrument.
